IMA Medal Committee
C. Prewitt will be invited by the 2009 Goldschmidt scientific committee chaired by Christopher Ballentyne, to present a plenary lecture on Tuesday 23 June 2009 at the Davos Goldschmidt meeting on the occasion of his award of the IMA medal.
The 2009 IMA medal - message from Marcello Mellini, chair of the IMA medal Committee:
The second IMA Medal recipient will be presented by the International Mineralogical Association in 2009. It will be awarded for excellence in mineralogical research. The recipient will be chosen for scientific eminence as demonstrated primarily by scientific publications of outstanding original research in mineralogy. It will be a lifetime
achievement award.
The successful candidate will be drawn from one of the 39 national societies or groups that are members of the IMA.
Service to mineralogy, teaching, and administrative accomplishment will not be the primary consideration for the award.
Nomination packages must be up to date and complete. Each nomination must be accompanied by a nomination checklist, which is available online or from the IMA secretariat. A nomination package must include:
* a cover letter from the nominator outlining the candidate qualifications in light of the criteria for the award.
* supporting letters from at least three but no more than five individuals. These letters should focus on how the candidate meets the criteria for the award.
* a complete curriculum vitae and a bibliography of published works, exclusive of abstracts, book reviews, and papers that have not yet been accepted for publication.
The IMA encourages the nominator to send an electronic version of the nomination package to the committee chair, Marcello Meelini.
The recipient of the IMA Medal will present a lecture on a topic related to the award a year after at the meeting during which the medal recipient is named. The lecture will be published in a suitable international journal of mineralogy, with the agreement of the IMA Medal Committee.
Nomination packages are to be received by the chair of the IMA Medal Committee before April 1, 2009.
Informations on the procedure to submit nominations is also available on the nomination page of the IMA website.

Charles Prewitt's plenary lecture on Tuesday 23rd June
Title: History and Significance of ABX3 Crystal Chemistry Investigations
Abstract: There is substantial interest among the mineralogical and related communities in phase transitions involving materials with the general formula, ABX3, e.g., MgSiO3, CaSiO3, FeTiO3, FeGeO3, NaMgF3, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Gd2S3, and many others. The interactions of elements in these specific configurations provide an interesting framework for analysis of many different, but related properties. Although some of these phases are not considered to be major constituents of Earth's mantle, knowing their crystal-chemical behavior is considered to be essential for understanding overall mineralogical character and, in particular, how they react to changing environmental conditions. Recent developments based on synchrotron-related experiments provide powerful new tools, especially those that give new information on high-pressure, high-temperature mineral properties.
Part of a message from Chris Ballentine, Janet Hering and Philippe Van Cappellen of the Goldschmidt2009 Science Committee
""The Science Committee have finalised the science program for Goldschmidt2009. An international science panel of more than 150 geochemists has selected 130 sessions within 19 themes covering the breadth and depth of geochemistry.
For full details click here.
The conference website will open to accept abstract submissions on 1st Jan 2009 with a closing date of 22nd Feb 2009.
The conference will be held in a dedicated conference centre (expanded since the successful 2002 Goldschmidt meeting) with additional space in the adjacent indoor stadium.""

IMA Web site evolution
The Web designer, Christine Lecluse and Webmaster, Maryse Ohnenstetter have followed a two-day course on MySQL and PHP langages to learn to use the IMA database, and a one-day course on the creation of a dynamic website (7, 10, 14 October).
Since the creation of the first IMA database on the 16th of September, several modifications were made to include the maximum of informations on the different IMA components and IMA activities, which are progressively, recorded on the eleven tables of the IMA database.
An additional one-day course has to be followed on the structure of a dynamic website. Later on, a first project has to be created on an IMA dynamic website using the IMA database.
Presently, informations are currently included on the present-day static website.
