Mission: To encourage and promote collective effort through the international community using mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks as a basic means, assisted by tectonic and geophysical methods, to understand the origin and evolution of the solid Earth, including its mantle and crust on land and beneath ocean basins.

Tasks: Promote mineralogical, petrologic and geochemical investigation of the earth's crust and mantle through
- organizing symposia on the subject at international meetings/conferences;
- Publishing proceedings of sponsored conferences;
- Supporting participation of young scientists(students) in international conferences, symposia and workshops.
